The referee of Inter’s win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Wednesday night has been criticised for one of his decisions, according to a report in the Italian media today.

As has been reported by Corriere dello Sport, it was unusual that Romanian referee Ovidiu Hategan did not book Taras Stepanenko for his foul on Edin Dzeko at the end of the first half.

Th tackle on the Bosnian striker was late and looked to be a clear yellow card. Given the referee was very quick to blow fore free kicks throughout the match, it was odd that he did not give Taras Stepanenko a harsher punishment.

Beyond that decision that ultimately did not affect the outcome of the game, the referee and his team were fair in their calls to rule out two Inter goals for infringements.

The Lautaro Martinez push was not a clear foul but the contact is there to be seen.
