Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu has suggested that his upturn in form recently is down to an increased work rate during games, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.

Speaking to Mediaset Infinity after the 2-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday night, via FCInter1908, the Turkish midfielder said he is working on the physical side of his game and that is helping him to improve.

“New Calhanoglu? Yes, maybe there is a new Calhanoglu, who works harder. I’m happy, I’m doing well. I’m working a lot, also physically I feel very good. Thanks to the team, who helped me from day one. It’s an honour to be here.”

The victory in the Champions League means that Inter have qualified for the knockout stages for the first time in a decade. A deluge of missed chances in the first half had many fans concerned but then Edin Dzeko scored twice in the second half to secure the win.

“A very important victory, as well as the one against Napoli. We should have scored in the first half, but we didn’t and in the second half Edin finally scored. We are very happy.”

Inter will now turn their attentions back to the Scudetto race in Italy as they travel to face Venezia on Saturday evening. The gap to the top was cut to four points thanks to the win over Napoli on Sunday.

“Scudetto? The goal is that, for sure. But we have to be careful, because the championship is still long and everyone is close.”
