Former Serie A referee Paolo Casarin believes that Livio Marinelli did a good job of handling Inter’s Serie A clash with Venezia on Saturday.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, Casarin gave the view that Marinelli let the game flow and got the major decisions right with the help of VAR at the very end.

The Nerazzurri’s clash with Venezia was not a bad-tempered one, with the referee only having to go to his pocket twice including to book Venezia defender Ridgeciano Haps for the late handball penalty spotted by VAR.

The match went by at a good pace and Marinelli looked to have things under control throughout, with players clearly respecting his authority and not feeling that the decisions were going against them.

The referee did not spot the handball by Haps in the dying minutes of the match, but he was quick to reverse the decision on the advice of VAR.

“He conducted the match well,” Casarin said of Marinelli’s performance, “he was in frequent conversation with the players.”

“In the last moments he did not see a penalty in the Venezia area, but Massimiliano Irrati at the VAR informed him and he reversed it in a few seconds,” he added.
