Inter midfielder Christian Eriksen is almost certain to be barred from making a return to the pitch for the Nerazzurri, according to Italian media.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport outlined the situation around the Dane’s cardiac implant and described it as a “forgone conclusion” that his prospective return to Italian football will be ruled against by regulators.

Eriksen has been fitted with an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrulator) since he suffered a cardiac arrest at the Euros.

The device is not permitted to be worn by footballers according to Italian health and safety regulations, and so if he must be fitted with the implant permanently then he will not be able to play for Inter again.

A final medical verdict is expected as early as next week on whether the 29-year-old will be able to make do without the device, and it does not look as though he will be able to return for Inter.

Should this be the case, then the Dane will likely have to leave the club in search of football in another league.
