Legendary former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta feels that Inter have turned an important corner following their only Serie A loss of the campaign away to Lazio.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the Rossoneri legend identified the match against the Biancocelesti as the match after which Inter really began to show their strength on a consistent basis.

The Nerazzurri experienced perhaps their most bitter result of the campaign against Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio team, going ahead early before seeing their lead evaporate in the second half on a tempestuous evening.

The 3-1 reversal seemed to suggest that there was still work to be done to get the team to a level where they could keep firm control of matches and turn encouraging performances into the necessary results.

In the matches that have followed, however, Inter have gone undefeated in all competitions to secure progression to the Champions League knockout rounds with a game to spare and go from third in the Serie A table seven points off of top spot to just a point behind city rivals AC Milan in second.

More than this, the performances during the period have showed something special which suggests that there is every chance the team will keep on with this form.

“There is a date that changed everything,” Costacurta said of Inter’s season. “At the Olimpico, against Lazio, Inter began in strong fashion, even without the South Americans who had returned late from the international break.”

He continued that “In the second half they played badly, they conceded that controversial goal with Dimarco on the ground, and from there they knew that they needed to turn a corner.”

“Since that match there have been eight victories and two draws,” he added.

“As a result,” Costacurta explained, “Inter play with an ease and confidence that sees them reach the opposition penalty area in a way resembling City or Bayern.”

He concluded that “After watching these matches, I see Inter’s way of playing the ball into opposing penalty areas as similar to the top teams in Europe.”
