Former Inter defender Daniele Adani believes that the Nerazzurri play a very modern brand of football under current head coach Simone Inzaghi.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Rai Radio 2, Adanai hailed the ability of the players to interchange positions on the pitch in particular as evidence that the former Lazio coach has made them a very contemporary team.

Inter line up with a three-man defense, wing-backs either side of them, a three-man midfield, and a strike partnership, at least nominally.

However, describing the setup in this way doesn’t tell the whole story, as many of the ways in which the Nerazzurri break opponents down are reliant on giving the players the license to roam around and cover for one another.

Adani is very impressed by this, and feels that the particular vision of football is one which is very much taking the team out of the more traditional ways that the game is played.

“They have more variation, more creativity, they leave the players freer to interpret their roles,” he said of this Inter side.

As an example he states, “There is a play by Bastoni who starts a move with around twenty passes and runs up the pitch with the ball. Bastoni starts from behind, dribbles past the last man, and is the one who ends up in the position of centre forward.”

“He is already in the penalty area and he plays the ball to Calhanoglu who feeds it to Dzeko,” Adani went on. “There is a creativity, a fluidity of the roles, the players interchange positions in a way that is very modern.”
