Former Lazio and Torino goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani believes that Inter have the quality to fight for the Champions League along with the rest of the top sides in the competition.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the 55-year-old named the Nerazzurri as the Italian team with the best prospects in Europe’s top competition and suggested that they are at the same level as Bayern Munich and the top Premier League sides.

No Italian team has managed to lift the Champions League trophy since the Nerazzurri last did so on their way to the treble in 2010, with the competition having been dominated by Spanish and English teams as well as Bayern.

This season could be more of the same, with the likes of Bayern and English teams Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea looking the likeliest teams to go on and win the competition based on early form.

However, there are still many teams with realistic prospects in the competition such as Ajax, Paris Saint-Germain, Real and Atletico Madrid, and also the Italian teams, of which Marchegiani believes that Inter are right up there among the favourites this campaign.

He stated that Bayern are favourites for the competition, “Along with the English and, why not, an Italian side. This season I am more confident than I have been recently.”

“I am thinking of Inter in particular,” he went on. “They are the team who are growing the most. They have the right qualities for this type of match, a head-to-head match against a strong team.”
