Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi feels that his team must take the positives from this evening’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after the match, the coach emphasized learning from their mistakes with many important matches remaining to be played.

The Nerazzurri played with attacking intent from the first whistle at the Bernabeu, clearly looking like they understood that a draw wouldn’t do them any good.

Inzaghi saw his team create a number of good chances to score, but as had been the case against Real at the San Siro, they were not able to find the back of the net from any of them, and then Real scored and Nicolo Barella was sent off.

Now Inter must settle for qualifying for the knockout rounds second place in their group, though there are important lessons to be learned from this experience.

“We have a lot of regret,” Inzaghi stated. “We played well in the first half, with personality, creating many dangerous situations.”

“But we went in at halftime a goal down, which was probably not a fair reflection of play,” he reflected. “We wanted to get a different result but this defeat will help us, we can learn from it for future experiences.”

On Barella’s sending off, he stated that “He made a serious mistake, but he is a smart guy and immediately apologized to us, to me and his teammates.”

“The game had been open, he had even come close to equalizer,” he continued. “Sorry about him, it will serve as a learning experience and I hope it does not happen to he or any of his teammates again.”

The coach gave the view that “We built up play well, our only flaw was having finished the first half at a disadvantage.”

“It was the sixth game in a row since the break,” he went on, “some of 0ur players were a bit tired. We lost both games against Real, we played well but we needed something more.”

“We return from Madrid taking many positives,” he went on, “but the result is what counted and we lost.”

“Now we are diving right back into the league because we have another important match on Sunday evening,” Inzaghi emphasized, “we are in good form.”

Lastly he stated regarding the round of sixteen that “It is important that we get to February in our best form.”
