Inter showed yesterday evening that they can be competitive against the top teams in Europe even despite losing 2-0 to Real Madrid.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who argue that the Nerazzurri’s display in the Champions League clash at the Bernabeu can be a consolation even with the disappointing result.

The Nerazzurri were unable to translate their stellar domestic form into a result against the Merengues, losing 2-0 on a night which saw them lose Nicolo Barella through a second half red card.

The result was not the one that Inter wanted given that they had the chance to overtake the Merengues in top spot in Group D with three points.

However, the nature of the Nerazzurri’s performance was more positive, with Simone Inzaghi’s men putting in a proactive and high-tempo display at least up until the red card.

Looking back on their performance can give Inter confidence as they head into the knockout rounds, with their display having shown that they can be fully competitive with the top sides in Europe.

They will know, however, that there is more that they must do to put the finishing touches on performances like these and make a serious run in the competition.
