Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella will learn the full extent of his Champions League suspension in January, according to a report in the Italian print media today.

As has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport today, the 24-year-old midfielder was left mortified after being shown a straight red card for lashing out at a Real Madrid defender.

A challenge from Eder Militao had left Nicolo Barella in the advertising hoarding and the Nerazzurri midfielder swung a punch at the opponents’ legs in anger at the challenge.

That led to him being shown a straight red card at a crucial point in the game. He is reported to have immediately apologised to his coach and teammates after the match.

UEFA will decide on January 25th whether Nicolo Barella’s suspension will be for one match or two matches.

Inter may turn to Cagliari’s Nahitan Nandez as a backup to Nicolo Barella to give him more frequent rest.
