Referee Matteo Marchetti made no major errors in his handling of yesterday evening’s Serie A clash between Inter and Cagliari, according to Italian media.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who note that apart from missing a couple early yellow cards the official got everything right.

Marchetti didn’t have too many decisions to make in an evening that was not ill-tempered, but he stamped his authority by awarding a penalty to Inter and a yellow card to Alessio Cragno quickly for the goalkeeper’s ill-timed challenge on Denzel Dumfries, both correct decisions.

The Gazzetta argue that both Alberto Grassi and Ivan Perisic should have been cautioned for a bad foul and a high boot respectively, though neither were.

Lautaro Martinez, on the other hand, did go into the book for a challenge on Dalbert, which the newspaper adjudge to be the correct decision, while his high boot on Raoul Bellanova is not deemed worthy of a booking as it made contact with the opponent’s chest rather than his face.

Lastly, the Gazzetta argue that Marchetti got both handball decisions correct, quickly indicating that there was no penalty in Milan Skriniar’s contact on the ball in the area, and also ruling Lautaro Martinez’s second goal a valid goal given that it struck his shoulder rather than arm as he controlled it.
