Former Inter midfielder Benoit Cauet believes that current Nerazzurri star Nicolo Barella is the top player in his position in Europe at the moment.

Speaking to Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, the Frenchman praised the 24-year-old’s quality and well-rounded skillset and also gave his thoughts on the Nerazzurri as a whole this season.

Barella has gone from strength to strength since joining Inter during the summer of 2019 from Cagliari, quickly establishing himself as a key player at the club and then one of the best in the Italian top flight.

The 24-year-old was a key player on the way to last season’s Scudetto, won the Euros with Italy during the summer, and he seems to have even added to his game this campaign under new coach Simone Inzaghi.

Cauet feels that the entire Nerazzurri team is something special this season and that there are many important individual players, though it is Barella he singled out for special praise.

“The squad is strong, the team and club are working well and the results are evidence of that,” he stated.

“You can see Inzaghi’s influence in how they play,” he went on, “he’s given them a different style of football than Conte who had already done very well.”

Cauet stated that “Their game is often more attacking and has different characteristics. It must be said that some great players have left, but when a club needs money, you have to sell.”

“But those who came in are doing well,” he went on, “look at Calhanoglu. Dumfries understands his role in different situations more and more and is showing his ability, Dzeko has replaced the great Lukaku.”

“My favourite in midfield is Barella,” he added, “he is extraordinary, in his position he is the best in Europe. He has quality, technique, charisma, will and determination. I’ll say it once again, in Europe he has no equal.”
