Italian journalist Maurizio Compagnoni believes that Inter will have a very difficult time getting out of their Champions League round of sixteen tie against Liverpool, but that they have a chance.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Compagnoni gave the view that the Reds are favourites but that the Nerazzurri can still make it through if they play with composure and unsettle their opposition.

Few Inter fans will have felt that their draw for the first knockout round of Europe’s top competition was favourable, with Liverpool having gotten out of their group with six wins from six in addition to their blistering form domestically.

The Premier League side are one of the favourites for the entire competition, and Compagnoni is of the view that they are rightly regarded as favourites to progress against the Nerazzurri.

However, Inter have been in great form themselves, and he feels that if they can play their game and avoid mistakes they have a good chance.

“Ajax are strong, but changing to Liverpool is definitely a more difficult draw,” he stated. “Their last match dates back to 2008, the current Liverpool are stronger than that Liverpool, but also the current Inter is stronger than that Inter.”

“In the first leg Liverpool won it late after an incorrect red card to Materazzi,” he recalled.

For this time around, Compagnoni believes that “Liverpool are the favourites, but Inter can give it a go.”

“Inter can give Liverpool a hard time by playing the match they did against Real in Madrid but with the necessary corrections,” he added, “obviously with a better attitude.”

“If you push Liverpool and deny them control you have a chance,” he concluded.
