On-loan Inter striker Sebastiano Espostio has apologized for refusing to come off the bench for his current club Basel in their Europa Conference League match against Qarabag.

This according to Basel head coach Patrick Rahmen, who spoke to Swiss news outlet Blick and explained that the 19-year-old regrets his actions, also emphasizing the seriousness of the player’s infraction.

Esposito has had a positive loan spell in Switzerland, showing good form in front of goal for Basel and becoming one of their key players.

However, after he refused to come on as a substitute during the closing minutes of the Swiss team’s group stage tie against Qarabag, he was sanctioned by the club and missed their most recent game against Servette.

It remains to be seen what further action will be taken and whether Esposito will be back in the squad to face Young Boys in Basel’s next match, but he has apologized and acknowledged that his behaviour was out of line.

“He knows he made a mistake,” Rahmen stated, “his behaviour was intolerable. Nevertheless, the club and I are still close to him.”
