Former Fiorentina and Benfica striker Nuno Gomes has said that one of the Milan sides will win the Scudetto this season, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Speaking during an interview with Corriere dello Sport, the former Portuguese striker was asked who he thinks will win Serie A at the end of the season.

Nuno Gomes confidently suggested that the trophy will remain in Milan but also discussed the growing quality of the teams in the division and the increased competition.

“AC Milan or Inter. I am pleased that Italian football, the best in Europe 15-20 years ago, is slowly returning to high levels.

“It is positive that there are more spectacles and more teams fighting for the title: Juventus are a bit distant and are suffering, but Atalanta are going really strong because they play good football.”

Italy will potentially be playing Portugal in a play off to see who will go to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Both teams failed to win their qualification groups meaning should they win their first play off match, they will then face each other to see who gets a spot in the group stages.

It is clear that Nuno Gomes is not happy that his team will likely have to face Italy to stand any chance of qualification.

“I don’t like it at all, but unfortunately it went like this. I and all football lovers are very sorry not to see one of the two in Qatar.

“It will be hard and difficult to watch a World Cup without one or even both of the winners of the last two European Championships. The draw, unfortunately, that’s how it went.”
