Former Inter defender Riccardo Ferri has said that he does not recall seeing an Inter team play like Simone Inzaghi’s is this season, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Riccardo Ferri had nothing but praise for the performances of Inter this season, a team that now sits top of the table having scored the most goals of anyone.

“They express exciting football and, at the same time, get the results. I don’t remember an Inter like this. They are one of the most beautiful expressions of our league, they deserve to be first and to get all this praise.

“They always try to optimise the maximum the qualities they have and it gives satisfaction to everyone: to the fans, but also to football fans in general.”

Inter were expected to regress significantly this season as they lost Antonio Conte as head coach, Achraf Hakimi at right back, and Romelu Lukaku in attack. Riccardo Ferri feels that the backbone and mentality that Antonio Conte gave the team is still there.

He also feels that the likes of Beppe Marotta have done a wonderful job to create a competitive squad in those conditions.

“There was a lot of concern at the start, but two things remained: the backbone and the mentality given by Antonio Conte.

“Indeed, I would add a third: the company, which was consolidated with the arrival of Beppe Marotta and thanks to the work of all the others. We must praise the work of the managers, who are good and reactive in closing the gaps in the squad.”

On the Champions League draw against Liverpool, Riccardo Ferri feels the team cannot complain about being given a difficult draw.

“Every year they struggle to get to the top four and then to go to the round of 16, complaining would be a form of weakness: if you are a great team, you know what you are up against.

“The more you level up, the more responsibilities increase. And this in all sectors, not just in football. You also need to know that you can reach important results with fewer players and some injuries.”
