Italian journalist Maurizio Compagnoni has suggested that Liverpool beating Inter in the Champions League Round of 16 is not as clear cut as some may think, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.
Speaking whilst on Sky Sport, via L’Interista, Maurizio Compagnoni explained that despite losing to Real Madrid in the final group game of the Champions League this season, the Nerazzurri did put Los Blancos under serious pressure during spells.
“Against Real Madrid, the Nerazzurri lost but also showed great football, putting the merengues in serious difficulty.”
That shows that they have the ability to mix it with the best but the journalist was quick to accept that Liverpool are certainly the favourites for the Round of 16 tie.
That being said, a comparison was made between this tie and when Inter knocked Barcelona out the tournament in 2010 on the way to winning the whole tournament.
“Liverpool remain the favourite, they are stronger, but if I think back to 2010 and the double challenge with Barcelona some comparisons can be made. I don’t think it’s as clear as many say.”
Inter were initially set to play against Ajax but a mistake meant the draw had to be redone and they got Liverpool.
