Inter could resume their pursuit of Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez during the January transfer window, but will only do so if Matias Vecino leaves the club.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who report that Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi is still ready to continue working with Vecino despite the Uruguayan’s relatively limited playing time so far this campaign.

Vecino has not featured regularly this season, especially not as a starter, though Inzaghi is happy with keeping him in the squad and plans to use him during the second half of the campaign.

The 30-year-old could ask to be sold in January, however, and should this be the case then Inter would seriously consider fellow Uruguayan Nandez to take his place in the squad.

Stefano Sensi is still not seen as reliable in terms of his fitness, and so the club would likely want to shore up midfield depth with another option in the form of Nandez were Vecino to depart.

The versatile 25-year-old had been a target in the summer with the club considering him as a successor to Achraf Hakimi on the right given his demonstrated proficiency at right wing-back.

However, the midfielder can also play centrally and would be a target to fill Vecino’s spot in midfield in the event of a sale.
