Legendary former Marseille, AC Milan, and Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly believes that Inter have broken Juventus’s recent stranglehold over Serie A.

Speaking to Turin-based newspaper La Stampa in an interview published in today’s print edition, the Frenchman gave the view that the Bianconeri’s monopoly on the Italian top flight is now over thanks to the Nerazzurri.

Juventus set a record in Serie A by winning nine Scudetti in a row, seeming to always be able to find the extra bit of quality or needed result to prevail over any rivals for nearly a decade.

The Bianconeri’s own quality was at the heart of their dominance over this period, but the relative weakness of their major rivals also helped them out, with Inter having looked far from capable of pushing them for much of their winning run.

Last season the Nerazzurri reached the peak of their growth over a period of a few years, while Juventus stumbled and in the end finished well behind Inter who won the Scudetto.

This season the trend looks to have continued, and Desailly believes that the Nerazzurri have knocked Juventus off their perch.

“Juve monopolized Serie A for nine years and killed the ambitions of the other teams,” he stated. “Now a cycle has ended and Inter have returned, but with the desire to be more able to compete in Europe.”

He added that “Milan are trying to recover to the level they fell from, even if they have disappointed in the Champions League. They are intriguing, but still struggle to keep their best players.”
