Inter boss Simone Inzaghi has said that very few people tipped Inter to be Serie A title favourites during the summer but now the opinions have changed, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.

Speaking to Radio Rai after the 1-0 victory over Torino on Wednesday night, via FCInternews, Simone Inzaghi explained that in July and August when Inter were losing Achraf Hakimi and Romelu Lukaku people claimed the Nerazzurri would not be favourites to win Serie A.

Now that his team are sitting top at Christmas, the judgements have changed a lot: “The winter title does not go in the trophy cabinet, it must be just a stimulus to continue to do well.

“Now probably everyone says that we are the favourites, but in July and August there were other judgments. I am fortunate to have extraordinary young people who work hard every day, and we want to continue like this also in the year to come.”

The 1-0 win over Torino on Wednesday night meant that Inter finished 2021 at the top of the table and are four points clear of AC Milan. They are seven points clear of Napoli.

The match against Torino was not an easy test for Inter and Simone Inzaghi was pleased with the performance despite washing Inter had scored a second goal.

“Difficult game, we knew we had to face a team in good form. We are very satisfied with the match because we did well in management.

“In the second half we tried to keep them as far as possible from our area, we risked a little bit, the only drawback is not having scored the second goal in the first half because we could have done it.

“Torino, for how they played, deserves more than tenth place. But I repeat that every match we go to face is difficult. In recent years I have always faced Juric with Verona and Genoa, they have always been tough matches.”
