Former Inter defender Alvaro Pereira has suggested that Inter could still knock Liverpool out of the Champions League despite being clear underdogs, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Speaking during an interview with L’Interista, the Uruguayan explained that it is not impossible to imagine Inter beating Liverpool because of the quality of the Nerazzurri squad.

“It can be done, it’s not impossible, Inter have a great team.”

Out of all the options that Inter could have been drawn against in the Champions League Round of 16, Liverpool are arguable the hardest opponent possible. The other undesirable draws include Manchester City and Bayern Munich.

The away goals rule has been scrapped for this 2021/22 season in the Champions League and Alvaro Pereira feels that that could be a benefit for Inter.

“Then a fundamental factor that could benefit the Nerazzurri is the fact that there is no longer the away goal rule. I believe that the team that does not start favoured in the double confrontation can benefit more, as in this case it is Inter.”

Alvaro Pereira cited a European tie against Tottenham Hotspur that he was part of with Inter where the Nerazzurri were defeated due to the away goals rule that was in place.

“In the match that we played in England against Tottenham it was fatal, as we went to recover 3-0 in the first leg with a 4-1 return, leaving anyway.”
