Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi believes that Inter’s status at the top of the Serie A table is well-deserved.

Speaking to Italian newspaper Quotidiano Sportivo in an interview published in today’s print edition, the Nerazzurri legend gave the view that his former club are leading the way in the Italian top flight on merit.

Inter fell behind the likes of AC Milan and Napoli during the early stages of the campaign, with their decent start to the season still seeing them lose ground to those two teams’ nearly perfect starts.

However, as the season has wore on it has been the Nerazzurri who have shown more consistency and form to surge to the top of the table.

Meanwhile, other major rivals such as Juventus, Atalanta, and Roma have looked some ways behind the Nerazzurri at the top level in Italian football right now despite positive signs.

For Bergomi Inter’s place at the top reflects their performances relative to their rivals.

“Inter deserve to be top of the table,” Bergomi stated, adding that “Milan have paid for the absences from the team, while Juve have missed Ronaldo’s goals.”
