Inter and AC Milan have a backup consideration should the construction of their new stadium in the San Siro district be held up.

This according to Italian news outlet L’Interista, who report that the clubs could decide to build the new stadium in the Falck area of the Sesto San Giovanni neighbourhood should going ahead with their first-choice plans prove infeasible.

The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri have been making progress on the new stadium recently, having gained approval from the city council and also recently unveiled the design selected for the project.

The timeline that the clubs are working with should see construction begin in 2023, and the stadium completed and ready for use by 2027.

However, there remains significant opposition to the project, especially in the form of the “Yes to Preserve Meazza” committee who are against the proposed demolition of the existing San Siro stadium.

The group have already filed appeals in a city court to halt the demolition of the existing stadium, and it remains to be seen how this will affect the timeline for the project.

However, the clubs see the new stadium as vital for modernizing their infrastructure and increasing revenues, and they do not intend to wait around should these legal challenges cause the construction to come to a lengthy stop.

Should the clubs feel that the delays are becoming too much of a problem, they could resurrect the idea of building in the Falck area.

These plans have long been abandoned or at least put on standby as the clubs preferred to press forward with the plans of building in the San Siro area, where they have now secured approval from the city council and from Mayor Beppe Sala.

However, they are ready to reconsider and use these plans as a backup option should the delays in the San Siro plan render it infeasible.
