Inter are working on a new deal for captain Samir Handanovic that will keep him on at the club past next summer when his current contract expires.

This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, who report that the Nerazzurri still hope to keep the 37-year-old in the squad even after the arrival of Andre Onana.

Handanovic’s current deal is set to expire at the end of June 2022, and no agreement has yet been found on a renewal.

The club have identified Onana as the long-term replacement for the Slovenian, and will sign the Ajax goalkeeper next summer on a free transfer.

However, Handanovic could still remain in the team as a backup option while the Slovenian settles in, and this is what Inter are hoping for.

It remains to be seen, however, whether the current keeper will decide to accept an offer of a new deal from the Nerazzurri or if he will decide to move away in the summer.
