Former Venezia and Parma midfielder Walter Sabatini has claimed that Inter striker Edin Dzeko could make the difference in the Scudetto fight this season, according to a report in the Italian media.

As has been reported as part of an interview with Tuttosport, Walter Sabatini discussed the quality of Simone Inzaghi as a coach but also the excellent work done by those high up at the club to bring in Edin Dzeko when Romelu Lukaku left.

“Inzaghi as a player was giving indications, he probably was already a coach. Simone is very close to winning the Scudetto. Dzeko? I worked with Edin in Rome: as well as a player, he is an amazing guy.

“The decision of Marotta, Ausilio and Inzaghi to take Dzeko after Lukaku was smart. I don’t understand why Juventus didn’t also think of Dzeko for the replacement of Ronaldo.

“With a trident Dybala-Dzeko-Chiesa now the Bianconeri would have many more goals, more points and certainly Inter would have several fewer. In the end, Dzeko could prove decisive for the Scudetto.”

Walter Sabatini has also discussed Sassuolo forward Gianluca Scamacca who looks like he will be part of a bidding war between Juventus and Inter in the summer. The pair have worked together in the past and he feels that behind Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic, Gianluca Scamacca is the best striker in Italy.

“I have always thought of Scamacca as the centre forward of the future fro AS Roma and now he could very well be. Unfortunately, when he was in the Allievi, I did everything to keep him, even offering him a first team contract.

“But the family lived on the outskirts of Rome and he wanted to have this experience in the Netherlands, at PSV. Maybe Gianluca at Juve would not make a difference in the short term like Icardi, but he is nearing completion and will become a top player. If in Italy the best striker is Vlahovic, Scamacca is second.”

Speaking more specifically about Dusan Vlahovic, Walter Sabatini explained that he thinks the Serbian is in the same category as the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

“The Serbian, on the other hand, belongs to the category of decisive attackers: I put him on a par with his peers Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. And I also put Victor Osimhen in it.

“Vlahovic is ideal for any big European team. In January he stays in Florence. In the summer I see him in England or at Bayern, as Lewandowski’s heir.”
