Inter captain Samir Handanovic could remain at the club and fight for the starting position with Andre Onana next season.

This according to to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who report that the Slovenian may still be given the opportunity to be the first-choice goalkeeper for the Nerazzurri.

Onana will arrive next summer on a free transfer from Ajax, with the Cameroonian having been identified as the long-term successor to Handanovic in goal.

The captain sees his current deal with Inter run out at the end of June 2022, and he has yet to agree on an extension.

The club are reportedly ready to offer the 37-year-old a new contract even after Onana is signed, and could even give him the chance to continue competing for the starting spot while Onana settles in.

It remains to be seen if the Slovenian will wish to stay on after Onana joins at any rate, or whether his preference will be to move to another club where he has more of a guarantee of playing time.
