Inter’s head doctor Piero Volpi believes that the club’s athletic training and medical staff are responsible for the Nerazzurri’s relative good fortune with injuries so far this season.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Volpi explained that the Nerazzurri are doing everything they can to help the players cope with the hectic pace of the football calendar on a physical level.

Across different leagues, the hectic schedule that players face for both club and country as meant that injuries and fatigue can be a serious problem if players’ playing time and fitness isn’t managed properly.

Injuries have already played a role in the Serie A season, with Inter one of the less affected clubs over the first half of the campaign.

Volpi feels that this is attributable to the work that he and the rest of the club’s staff have done to be proactive about preventing these issues.

“Credit has to be given to all the coaches and staff for the work they do with the players, as well as to the directors for signing players who have certain characteristics,” he explained.

“People within the game have been sounding the alarm for some time that we play too often,” he stated. “That is one of the big points, players are playing more with both their national teams and clubs.”

“Football is changing in a really significant way,” he went on, “we used to play every seven days and now it’s more like every three days. This is not just the big teams either.”

Volpi said that “In my opinion it is more important than ever to invest in athletic training, this can be worth a few points in the table.”

“This must be our way of looking at things, and it can also apply to the prevention of COVID,” he added. “Us doctors must also change and adapt along with football.”
