Italian journalist Paolo Condo has suggested that Inter need to raise the level of the Italian game when they face Liverpool in the Champions League in February, according to a report in the Italian print media.

Whilst writing for La Repubblica, the journalist explained that the top team in Italy, which is Inter right now given the recent Scudetto win and their lead at the top of Serie A, must raise the level in the Champions League.

“Lukaku’s regrets are music for the Nerazzurri’s ears, collecting better numbers than last year and developing a game that intrigues in a big Champions League match against Liverpool in the round of 16

“It’s not a benevolent draw, but it’s about time the leading team of our league raises the level in the Champions League.”

Paolo Condo added that many have wanted Juventus to do that for years but despite reaching the final, they have not won the competition.

“We’ve been asking Juve for years – who have a winnable tie against Villarreal – it’s right today to expect it from Inter.”

Before AC Milan’s match against AS Roma on Thursday night, Inter were four points ahead of their rivals. Paolo Condo feels that AC Milan are the only real challengers to Inter now and says the direct clashes to come are key.

“From November to Christmas, Inter gave a powerful shake-up to the standings. In the bloodless landscape that it has left behind it resists, bruised but not yet detached, only AC Milan: at the moment the Scudetto race concerns the two Milanese and that’s it, and the period that separates us from the resumption of the Cups – mid-February – it contains most of the decisive matches.

“There is the direct clash of February 6, there is Milan-Juve, there are above all the matches of Inter against Lazio, Atalanta and Naples.”

Inter have a game in hand after the postponement in Bologna.
