Legendary former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga believes that Andre Onana will have a good opportunity to develop playing alongside Samir Handanovic at the Nerazzurri.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the 61-year-old gave the view that the Cameroonian can settle in and improve playing alongside the more experienced Handanovic.

Onana is all set to join Inter in the summer on a free transfer from Ajax, with the 25-year-old having long been identified by the club as the preferred long-term replacement for captain Handanovic between the sticks.

It remains to be seen if Handanovic decides to renew with the club given that his current deal runs out at the end of June.

However, the Nerazzurri have already offered the 37-year-old an extension to stay on, either as a backup or to compete for the starting spot whilst Onana settles in.

Zenga believes that having a more experienced player in the same position in the squad will not be a bad thing for Onana.

“Over the last decade, goalkeepers have changed a lot,” he stated, “there used to be more of the ‘Italian’ school, whereas now they have become more like outfield players.”

He stated that “Onana can improve at Inter because he will have Samir Handanovic alongside him, who is having a great season.”

“Onana has already played in the Champions League has been tested at a top club in Ajax,” he continued, “but he is still young.”

On the possibility of having both Onana and Handanovic in his squad, Zenga stated that “This will be a problem that Simone Inzgahi likes to have, as with Mauricio Pochettino’s problem of having both  Gianluigi Donnarumma and Keylor Navas.”
