Former Inter defender Francesco Colonnese believes that current Nerazzurri player Alessandro Bastoni is currently the best Italian defender.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the 50-year-old named Bastoni has being the top player among the current Azzurri defenders after the 22-year-old’s display against Lazio yesterday evening in Serie A.

Bastoni has grown into the Inter team since he was made a regular starter by Antonio Conte during the 2019-20 season, and now he looks to be more assured than ever.

The 22-year-old looks composed both defensively and in possession, and he even managed to score a spectacular goal from a long-range strike in yesterday’s win over the Biancocelesti.

Colonnese feels that with the older generation starting to be on its way out, it is Bastoni who is the standout payer in Italy’s backline for years to come.

“I see him reaching the very highest level, like Virgil van Dijk,” he stated. “He can be at the level of Sergio Ramos, he can really do everything – he can play in a back three or a back four, he has goals, and defensively he has improved.”

“In my opinion right now he is by far the best Italian defender,” he went on, “and certainly one of the top four or five in all of Europe.”
