Former AC Milan, Napoli, and Juventus forward Jose Altafini believes that Inter are the team to beat in the Scudetto race but that the Rossoneri could catch up with them.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportItalia, he emphasized the fact that the Rossoneri do not have the distraction of European football as a possible factor that could give them the edge over the Nerazzurri in the Serie A title race.

Inter are currently ahead of their city rivals in the Serie A table, one point clear with a game in hand, but they will know that with the form that Milan are in their position is far from safe.

Both teams have almost half a season left to play, and the Rossoneri will have many opportunities to catch up to the Nerazzurri, not least in the form of the derby next month.

Each team also has the Coppa Italia to consider, but Inter will be even more preoccupied by their Champions League round of sixteen tie as well as potentially more huge fixtures should the get past Liverpool.

“In my opinion Inter are favourites because they have improved a lot since last year,” Altafini stated. “Milan are playing very well, even though they’re without key players.”

He added that “Pioli is doing a good job, and they have the advantage that they don’t have to play in the Champions League.”
