Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni is still very young, but with the quality that he has already showed he can be the cornerstone of the Nerazzurri project for years to come.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who highlight Bastoni along with AC Milan forward Rafael Leao as the standouts of the “Class of 1999” in Serie A.

Bastoni has been a first-team regular for the Nerazzurri since the 2019-20 season, where coach Antonio Conte placed his trust in the young defender and was repaid with consistent displays in the backline.

In the following campaign, Bastoni was a key figure in the Nerazzurri’s Scudetto-winning team, and this time around the 22-year-old is picking up where he left off.

Inter could follow up their first Scudetto win in eleven years with another one in quick succession as they currently sit top of the table, and it is no coincidence that Bastoni has been around for both seasons.

The Gazzetta compare Bastoni to legendary former Inter captain Giacinto Fachetti, another player who interpreted the defensive role in a highly free and attacking way.

For the newspaper, the 22-year-old is a “Jewel of Milan” and of Inter who can be at the heart of a great team as the former captain had been.
