Inter are through to the quarterfinal of the 2021/2022 Coppa Italia after defeating Empoli by 3-2 at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

The Nerazzurri started well breaking the deadlock after just 13 minutes when Alexis Sanchez latched on to a cross from Denzel Dumfries.

Empoli then took over and equalized via Bajrami and took the lead via a Radu owngoal after Cutrone’s bullet header went off the crossbar hitting the Romanian before going into the back of the net.

However the Nerazzurri equalized at the death thanks to a gorgeous scissor-kick volley by Andrea Ranocchia and the game went to Extra Time where Inter scored the winner thanks to a goal from Stefano Sensi.

Andrei Radu – 4,5: Some have wondered if Radu could be a replacement short/long term for Handanovic. After tonight that discussion is put to bed.

Danilo D’Ambrosio – 6: Struggled in the start but worked himself into the match, especially defensively where he got better the more the game went on.

Andrea Ranocchia – 4,5/10: 4.5 is for being dreadful defensively throughout the game. The 10 is for scoring an absolute screamer to keep Inter in the competition.

Federico Dimarco – 6: No secret his passing, crossing and set pieces are his best traits but has vastly improved the defending part of his game as well.

Denzel Dumfries – 6,5: Marauded down the right flank for 120 minutes causing havoc. His touch isn’t exactly world class but his crosses are at times like for opener.

Roberto Gagliardini – 4,5: Awful performance offering nothing in either phase of the game giving the ball away needlessly time and time again until off in 77th minute.

Arturo Vidal – 6: Worked hard winning the ball defensively which he did but offered nothing in attack & tired until brought off in the 65th minute.

Matias Vecino – 4,5: A very poor performance by the Uruguayan international midfielder who looked in no-mans land until he was replaced in 65th minute.

Matteo Darmian – 5: Didn’t have a good day offensively making too many unforced errors but did OK in defence until replaced in the 65th minute.

Joaquin Correa  – N/A: Forced to come off in tears due to an injury after 5 minutes after Empoli’s Romagnoli climbed on top of him like mountain.

Lautaro Martinez – 6,5: One of few Inter players who did well throughout the entire match and was unlucky not to score. Taken off in 94th minute.

Alexis Sanchez – 7: Replaced Correa who came off injured in tears & broke the deadlock 7 mins later with a header. Always calm, cool & collected with ball.

Nicolo Barella – 6,5: Came on for Vidal in the 65th minute and immediately allowed Inter to take control of the midfield. Never stops running in both phases.

Ivan Perisic – 6,5: Brought on for Darmian in the 65th minute and marauded down the left until the end of the 120 minutes. A real leader at this Inter.

Hakan Calhanoglu – 6,5: Substituted on in the 65th min for Vecino and immediately showed the difference in class to the Uruguayan. A pillar in Inzaghi’s team.

Edin Dzeko – 6,5: Was brought on in the 77th minute for Gagliardini and started slow with a few missed touches before working himself into the game.

Stefano Sensi – 7,5: Hopefully start to turnaround of his Inter career, especially now after Correa’s injury. Showed his class from minute he set foot on pitch. MOTM.

Simone Inzaghi – 6,5: Overconfidence in his reserves who are no way near as good as he thought them to be. Luckily his starting players are fantastic.

Juan Luca Sacchi – 5: A performance on par with the quality of San Siro’s pitch: dreadful and at times unwatchable. Got many key decisions wrong repeatedly.

Inter – 6: Classic Inter to turn a routine match into a drama but one with a happy ending thanks to Stefano Sensi. Poor concentration throughout.
