The Senior Principal of Populous Italia who are designing the new San Siro has expressed his excitement at working on such a project, according to a report in the Italian media today.
Speaking during an interview with Mi-Tomorrow, Declan Sharkey explained that the size of the project is what excites him most and the ambition of the two clubs means that they do not need to compromise on any area of the design.
“The opportunity to work on a project of this magnitude and prestige is exciting. From a professional point of view, the clubs’ ambition to build a world-class home will allow us not to compromise in the development of the design.
“Using the most innovative technologies and work systems capable of offering fans a unique stadium experience, at the highest standards of the twenty-first century. I think that for the clubs the project was able to capture the spirit of Milan.”
Populous are the same company that designed Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium after they decided to move away from White Hart Lane.
Declan Sharkey claims that the design of that stadium has made it a tourist attraction in London and has subsequently boosted the number of jobs and level of investment in the area.
“The new stadium has regenerated the neighbourhood, bringing new visitors to the area, and creating job opportunities. Thinking about a new stadium means embracing a broad vision for sports venues, which bring value to the community.
“The development of the masterplan in its complex is central to the vision of the new San Siro, the stadium is located within 50,000 square meters of green space, with new sports facilities and recreational spaces that will be open to the public.”
With the green space that is very close to where the new stadium will be built, it is hoped the same effect will be had in Milan.
