Inter striker Edin Dzeko is glad to have broken his recent goal drought at the most opportune time by heading home the winner in this evening’s Serie A win over Venezia.

Speaking to InterTV after the match, the Bosnian spoke about the importance of the goal for him personally but especially for the team, who picked up three vital points heading into the international break.

Dzeko’s scoring form from the first couple months of the season has slowed down, and the 35-year-old once again looked like he didn’t quite have a clinical edge against Venezia despite his obvious technical ability and physical presence.

The striker had a few presentable opportunities to find the back of the net but looked to be heading for a frustrating evening along with the rest of the team as the clock ticked down.

However, in the dying minutes of the match the Bosnian rose to meet an excellent cross by Denzel Dumfries and his pinpoint header proved the winner on a tough night for the Nerazzurri.

“I needed this goal after going a while without scoring,” he said. “I don’t feel any regret, it came at the right time for the team and that’s what matters most of all.”

“When we win right at the end we show that we don’t give up, we have character and we believe in it until the end,” the striker added.

He explained that “It’s not easy to always win 2-0 or 3-0, today was especially tough because we were still tired from the last few days.”

“The pitch doesn’t help either,” he said of the state of the San Siro pitch, “but the most important thing is bringing it home.”

“As I’ve said,” Dzeko continued, “the coach has played football and he understands that a player like me can find the decisive goal even if it comes right at the death.”

“This isn’t the first time I’ve scored in the final minute,” he emphasized. “For us attackers, sometimes a good delivery is all you need even if you haven’t played very well.”

He emphasized that “The break is coming at the right time for us now.”

“We played 120 twice and have had three head-to-head clashes with top rivals,” he explained. “Those have always been difficult matches, in the end we’ve gotten the results we’ve needed.”

“It’s always difficult to stay at the top but most important is bringing home these games against so-called ‘small’ teams,” Dzeko emphasized. “Now we have two weeks to recover, and then we immediately have to focus on the derby.”
