Napoli striker Dries Mertens was disappointed to see Inter rescue three points against Venezia on Saturday, though he acknowledged that it was a great effort by the Nerazzurri.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after yesterday’s win over Salernitana, the Partenopei man expressed his thoughts about the dramatic nature of the Nerazzurri’s late win against Venezia.

Inter managed to make sure that they went into the international break with a solid lead over their Scudetto rivals by beating Venezia, but it had not looked like they would manage to as the match wound down.

Going into the final minute before added time, the score was level, and it took a last-gasp Edin Dzeko header to win the match for the Nerazzurri.

Napoli responded by beating Salernitana in convincing fashion yesterday, but could only draw to within four points of the Nerazzurri, who have a game in hand as well.

Mertens reflected that “Venezia played a great game at the San Siro, but Inter found a winner at the last minute, which was massive for them. It’s disappointing for us, but we’re only thinking about our next match which is against Venezia.”
