Inter President Steven Zhang has given the OK to the club to move for Atalanta wing-back Robin Gosens.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the Nerazzurri President has given the go-ahead as Gosens is seen as an important long-term target for the squad.

Inter are thinking about the signing of a left-sided wing-back not only to back up Ivan Perisic in the short term, but also to succeed the Croat in the long-term.

The club are not confident that they will be able to agree an extension with Perisic, and should the 32-year-old decide to leave in June at the end of his contract, they want a high-quality replacement lined up.

Gosens is seen as having the right profile to fill in for Perisic in the long-term, and so Zhang has approved moving for the German as an important long-term target, especially as coach Simone Inzaghi has stressed that the position is a major priority.

Atalanta value Gosens at €35 million, but the Nerazzurri could see this as a reasonable investment given the importance of the wing-back role in the team and the 27-year-old’s suitability for the position.

Inter cannot buy Gosens permanently this month, but there is a possibility that they could bring him in on loan during the January window and then look to make the deal permanent in June.

It remains to be seen if a deal can be reached with Atalanta on a formula for an initial loan, but the Nerazzurri are serious about trying and Zhang has given the go-ahead, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Premier League club Newcastle United have made an offer to Gosens worth a net of €3.5 million per season, though Inter feel that they can offer him a more attractive footballing project even if they cannot match the wages.
