Former AC Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini believes that the upcoming Milan derby is an important opportunity for the Rossoneri to get back into the Scudetto race with Inter.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN, the former midfielder highlighted the derby clash as potentially bring the do-or-die opportunity for Milan to catch up to their city rivals.

Inter face the Rossoneri in a match which has potentially significant Scudetto ramifications, with the Rossoneri four points behind them, albeit with the Nerazzurri having a game in hand on their city rivals.

A win or even a draw for Inter would solidify their position at the top of the Serie A table, but for Milan the match will be a rare opportunity to both take points off the league leaders while also gaining them themselves.

Ambrosini feels that with a win over Inter, the Rossoneri could well haul themselves back into the race at the top.

“If Inter are to win, Milan would likely abandon their Scudetto dreams,” he said. “But comparing it to cycling, I see it as being like a mountain pass in a race, it gives those who have fallen behind an opportunity to regain ground.”

“Winning could be decisive for Milan,” he added.
