Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi believes that Inter are still not ready to move on from Ivan Perisic despite completing the signing of Robin Gosens from Atalanta.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Bergomi stated that the Nerazzurri are still hoping to agree on a contract extension with the Croat despite having done very well to reinforce the position by signing Gosens.
Gosens arrives on an initial loan from Atalanta but will sign permanently until 2026, and the German adds significant quality to the Nerazzurri’s left side.
In bringing the 27-year-old in, the Nerazzurri have ensured that they have an option in the left wing-back position who has the right profile to at least compete for the starting position for seasons to come.
However, in spite of this, Bergomi believes that the club are still aiming to keep Perisic on past the end of his current contract.
“In signing Gosens I think Inter anticipated the situation well, as he didn’t want to renew from what I understand, and Atalanta were willing to let him go,” he said.
“It was a great move,” he went on. “I also know they want to renew Perisic, they’re not willing to go too high on wages but they want to renew.”
Bergomi added that “I think they signed Caicedo because Correa isn’t really reliable in terms of injury, and Inter have a number of important matches coming up, and having someone like Caicedo who Inzaghi knows well could be very important.”
“Sensi has also left,” he added, “in my opinion Inzaghi didn’t really see him as a midfielder primarily, he always used him as a second striker especially at the beginning of the campaign, and Calhanoglu can also play there in the absence of attackers.”
