Former Inter defender Riccardo Ferri has recalled his favourite Derby della Madonnina from when he was a player, according to a report in the Italian print media today.

Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Riccardo Ferri revealed that his favourite derby came in the 1988/89 season where the Nerazzurri won 1-0.

Inter would go on to win the title that season but it was the Rossoneri who managed to go on and win the European Cup under Arrigo Sacchi.

“My favourite derby is the one I won in the record season in 1988-89, against AC Milan who then won the Champions Cup at the end of the season. It was our humility, combined with the great tactics conceived by Trapattoni, that gave us the key to success.”

Riccardo Ferri appeared to find it particularly amusing that Arrigo Sacchi complained about Inter’s playing style after the match. As far as the former defender is concerned, you should use the tools that you have at your disposal.

“I remember that after the match Sacchi complained about our game, but what does it matter, everyone uses the weapons at their disposal to aim for victory.

“And that time we proved to be a real, solid team, aware of its limits but also very convinced of its own means. A mentality that led us to win the Scudetto against the odds.”

The derby on Saturday evening has the potential to have a great effect on the Serie A title race, as it did when Riccardo Ferri was playing. Inter can move seven points ahead of AC Milan.
