Inter captain Samir Handanovic feels that he and his teammates gave a good account of themselves for the majority of this evening’s Milan derby clash despite falling to a 2-1 defeat.
Speaking to InterTV after the match, the 37-year-old emphasized that there were still positives to take from their second Serie A loss of the campaign and that they must accept that the result didn’t go their way.
Inter looked to be on course for an important win against their city rivals and also the team closest to them in the Serie A table until the last twenty minutes or so of the derby.
The Rossoneri ratcheted up the pressure and in the end the Nerazzurri lost their composure at the most decisive moments to allow Olivier Giroud to score a match-winning brace in the space of a few minutes.
Handanovic is upset that the team let the result slip in one of their biggest matches of the season, but also feels that they played like their usual selves for the majority of the match.
“Today we did everything,” he said. “We had the game under control, we were playing well, we kept them under control, but we lost the ball a few two many times and were punished.”
“We have to look ahead about the next match already,” he added, “there’s no time for us to cry.”
“We had a last fifteen minutes to forget,” he said, “but there were also many positive aspects. We could have doubled our advantage, the team showed courage and strength, we were our usual selves for 75 minutes.”
“Unfortunately we didn’t manage the closing stages well,” he added. “There are many matches, you have to review the mistakes and make up for them. But it’s football: sometimes you risk and you are not punished, this time yes
