Italian journalist Paolo Condo believes that Inter failed to win either derby clash with AC Milan in Serie A due to not making more of their dominance of possession and chances in either match.

Speaking on Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after the Nerazzurri’s 2-1 loss to the Rossoneri, Condo emphasized that the Nerazzurri were never clinical across the two derby matches, which allowed their city rivals to strike.

Inter looked to have been the more convincing side until the closing stages of yesterday evening’s derby clash, but for all their proactive play they only applied the finishing touch once, with Ivan Perisic finding the back of the net from a corner.

Milan, by contrast, didn’t pass up the opportunities that came their way, with Olivier Giroud scoring a quickfire brace to make the most of the Rossoneri’s most sustained spell of pressure.

A similar story had already played out in the first derby of the season in November, most notably in the form of a missed penalty for Inter, and Condo feels that the Nerazzurri only have themselves to blame for this lack of finishing.

“Give or take five minutes this derby followed the same pattern of play as the first one,” he said. “The first three quarters were dominated by Inter, and then the final quarter belonged to Milan.”

“Already in the first derby, Milan came close to winning it in the closing stages, and this time they completed the coup,” he added.

“If we are to blame Inter, it should be for not securing the points by doubling their advantage,” he reflected. “The game was won and lost in midfield – Brozovic and Kessie went off, Diaz delivered and Vidal disappointed.”
