The VAR was correct not to intervene to potentially overturn the decision by on-pitch referee Marco Guida on the possible foul in the buildup to AC Milan’s equalizing goal against Inter in yesterday evening’s derby.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who argue that the incident did not fall within the scope of VAR and was entirely at the discretion of Guida as the on-pitch official.

Guida had a good view as Rossoneri striker Olivier Giroud won the ball off of Inter forward Alexis Sanchez, bundling over his old Arsenal teammate in the process.

Inter players protested immediately, and even more so when the action following the incident led to Giroud scoring the equalizing goal, the first of his quickfire brace to take all three points.

However, in the view of the Gazzetta, it was correct that the video assistant didn’t give Guida any advice after the fact, as it was not a clear and obvious error to be corrected by VAR whether it was seen as a foul or not.
