Former Lazio and West Ham United striker Paolo Di Canio feels that Inter midfielder Arturo Vidal doesn’t provide enough in possession when he is brought on in matches.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the former striker criticized the Chilean for his displays on the ball when he has come on as a substitute in recent matches.

Vidal has come on as a substitute in a number of Inter’s matches this season, in addition to a couple starts, and he has often helped the team see out matches with his experience.

However, in Saturday’s Serie A derby loss to AC Milan, the 34-year-old’s introduction in place of Hakan Calhanoglu coincided with a loss of control by his team at a crucial juncture in the match.

For Di Canio, the midfielder doesn’t do enough to either win or retain possession when he’s on the pitch for the Nerazzurri.

“When I see Vidal come on in matches, I get the feeling Inter are losing something,” he said of the Chilean. “Last year Vidal gave away two or three unnecessary penalties for reckless challenges.”

He went on to say that “I have the feeling that he’ll lose possession two or three times. He often loses the ball, and he doesn’t do enough to chase and win it back.”
