Inter are keen to avoid having tension between Samir Handanovic and Andre Onana over competition for the starting spot in goal next season should both be in the team.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the Nerazzurri are taking steps to ensure that there is not disharmony between the two players.

Onana is all set to arrive on a free transfer from Ajax in the summer, and he will be seen as the long-term successor to Handanovic and the solution in goal for many seasons to come.

However, the club are also preparing to offer a new deal to captain Handanovic, whose current contract expires at the end of the summer, but at reduced wages.

The 37-year-old would likely be ready to accept an extension, but he would not want to be seen as purely a backup option to Onana, wanting to continue to have a prominent role.

The Nerazzurri want to avoid an awkward situation similar to the one at Paris Saint-Germain where the experienced Keylor Navas and summer signing Gianluigi Donnarumma both have a claim to the starting spot but neither feels totally comfortable in their role.
