Inter’s win over Roma in the Coppa Italia yesterday evening gave them a much-needed lift given the mood of the team following Saturday’s derby loss to AC Milan.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who highlight how progression to the Coppa semi-finals has helped the Nerazzurri get past the disappointment of the derby.
The Nerazzurri experienced one of their most damaging stumbles of the season by throwing away a lead late on to allow their city rivals to draw to within a point of them at the top of the Serie A table in the derby.
This ran the risk of introducing a feeling of bitterness into the team, according to the Gazzetta, especially given the manner of Saturday’s defeat.
Inter got off to a blistering start by scoring within the first couple minutes against the Giallorossi, but had to see out some waves of pressure from their opposition who created chances.
According to the Gazzetta, there were moments where the team could have feared a repeat of Saturday’s capitulation from a leading position, but instead they saw the game out with a composed display on both sides of the ball.
Alexis Sanchez’s second-half screamer to double the first-half advantage will also increase the Nerazzurri’s confidence that they can kill teams off and get back to their goal-scoring best.
Overall, it was a good night for Inter, and one which shifted the mood from disappointment to confidence very quickly.
