Inter sporting CEO Beppe Marotta has said that sustainability now comes before sporting results when it comes to running a football club, according to a report in the Italian media.
Speaking during a webinar on foreign properties in Italian football, via FCInternews, Beppe Marotta explained that clubs have to be maintained financially even though by doing that, it can go against the passions of the fans.
“Today sustainability comes before the result, it is a principle that gives life to clubs in the long term and must be maintained, despite the differences with the passions of the fans.”
The Inter executive went on to explain that the arrival of foreign owners in Italy has changed the landscape when it comes to running a football club as before it was wealthy entrepreneurs who bankrolled football clubs.
“The arrival of foreign owners in this sense was important because it changed the business model that in our country centred on the patronage and generosity of entrepreneurs.”
Finally, he said that he feels everyone has got a common goal in football and that is to provide a product to the fans that is interesting.
“I think we all have a common goal, which is to propose a product that is interesting. This is why I say that litigation is useless and harmful, my hope is that everyone understands that in the end the core business is the game.”
Beppe Marotta has had his work cut out at Inter over the past year as he dealt with the clubs difficult financial position.
