Italian journalist Mario Sconcerti feels that Inter and Napoli both deserved the point for their performances in yesterday’s 1-1 draw in Serie A.
Writing in his column in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, the journalist suggested that the result hurts both teams a bit but is hardly decisively damaging.
The Nerazzurri will have hoped to have taken three points from their trip to Campania to really bounce back from the previous weekend’s disappointing derby defeat, but a point at least prevented the Partenopei from gaining any more ground on them.
Meanwhile, Napoli will see the match as a missed opportunity to at least temporarily overtake the Nerazzurri at the top of the table, but at the same time will be happy to have kept within touching distance of the top.
Sconcerti feels that overall the two sides both showed their quality as well as distinctiveness to earn a point that doesn’t overturn the title race but could help AC Milan most of all.
“Napoli vs. Inter was a great match between two different and equally good teams,” he writes. “There was a tension to each team despite their respective virtues, which prevented one from decisively surpassing the others.”
He adds that “Inter finished as the dominant side, but still got few shots at goal away. De Vrij looked to be almost mentally suffering in his duel with Osimhen, but in the end he kept him quiet.”
“It was a match conducted, rather than refereed, very well by Doveri, in which neither Napoli nor Inter were able to go over the top,” he continues.
“They are otherwise equal,”Sconcerti concludes, “but Inter are still somewhere between one and four points ahead. A fair result which hurts both teams a bit but without really dramatically altering complexion of the title race.”
