Inter defender Stefan de Vrij could drop to the bench for his team’s Champions League round of sixteen clash with Liverpool on Wednesday evening.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who report that the Dutchman couldbe benched based on his recent form if Alessandro Bastoni is fit.

De Vrij was culpable for giving away an early penalty to Napoli on Saturday, and generally has not looked fully comfortable in his role in the centre of the backline for some time this season.

Given this, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi could decide to give him a rest on the bench, although he would likely only do so in the event that Bastoni is fully fit to make a return from his ankle injury.

Should Bastoni be ready to start the match, however, Inzaghi could decide to reshuffle his back three and start Danilo D’Ambrosio in place of de Vrij for the massive clash.
