Inter must take the right approach tactically speaking if they hope to get anything out of Wednesday evening’s Champions League round of sixteen clash with Liverpool.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who detail the necessary approach and include good play in wide areas and control of the ball among the key aspects.
The Nerazzurri will face one of their most formidable opponents for the entire season in the form of the Reds, and must be at their best to stand a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals of Europe’s top competition.
One aspect of their play that will be important will be a strong and tactically astute performance from Edin Dzeko, who can be a playmaker in the final third and drag Liverpool’s defenders out to make space for Alexis Sanchez to attack in behind.
Meanwhile, the use of the wing-backs will also be important, and the Gazzetta argues that Ivan Perisic and Denzel Dumfries must pick their moments to be the most advanced players to unsettle the Reds’ defense in wide areas.
Control of possession will be another key aspect in determining the outcome of the tie, and the Gazzetta highlight the role of Arturo Vidal in this sense.
The Chilean is expected to come into the team for the suspended Nicolo Barella, and his experience and technical quality could prove vital to finding the right balance between safety and proactiveness when his team have the ball.
Lastly, Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi will have to organize his backline to not keep too high a line to allow the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah in behind, but also ensure that the team don’t get pinned back too much.
